Connect 1:1 Non-orthogonal joint
2015 / 2 Weeks
The Connect 1:1 structural connection is an elegant response to a two-week brief, completed as a group project in collaboration with three Stage 1 Mackintosh School of Architecture students. Connect 1:1 promotes user interaction with the space, using an exposed steel platform that can be decorated with items such as plants or sculpture. This helps the timber connection integrate more organically with the space in which it inhabits. The joint is simple and minimal, while the exposed bolts provide pleasing detail. Glue-laminated timber was chosen for its consistency and strength supporting large spans.
Applying my industrial design knowledge within the scope of architecture and interiors was a great chance to test my practical understanding of materials in a large scale application. I engaged closely with the architects and learned about their process. Prototyping (in collaboration with Kevin O’Malley) with foam, ply and steel was a very rewarding part of the project.
