Macchiato aluminium chair

The Macchiato chair is a lightweight, folding aluminium chair which aims to embody the simplicity, functionality and luxury of the classic macchiato. This luxury is provided by a bentwood backrest, inspired by the manufacturing process used to create the original Thonet cafe chair. Consideration of surface finish and manufacturing methods ensure the chair is durable, functional and easy to clean or repair, providing a positive interaction for both cafe workers and customers.
I started to generate ideas using quick line sketches of possible forms - using different perspectives allowed me to explore the folding mechanism from all angles before moving into physical prototypes. Above is an example of some sketches.
Engineering design decisions such as wall thicknesses and minimum bend radius were validated through the use of engineering analyses within Solidwork's FEA and research of aluminium manufacturing guidelines.
