‘Rise’ aims to reduce the immediate complexity of existing smart meters, combining a simple physical interface with an accompanying smartphone app. This allows the user, primarily young home owners, to customise their usage and trade their energy usage data with their service provider in return for personalised rewards such as free train tickets or extra mobile data. More complex usage information can also be viewed and tracked in the app, which would facilitate secure ‘data transactions’ in much the same way as a mobile banking service.
