Roll 01
2020 / 1 week
An experiment in working with textiles to create a tool roll for carrying all of those sketching essentials. It was cool to get hands-on with fabric and a sewing machine as it was something completely new to me. The material acted in ways that I hadn’t considered during the initial planning phase - a reminder of how important it is to understand material choice in the physical and tactile space when designing and prototyping.
This was one of the first times I had worked with fabric on a sewing machine. It was interesting to experience how the textile would twist, stretch and deform as it was stitched. In my head I foolishly assumed the fabric would cut easily and sit straight - it felt much more alive than I anticipated. This type of oversight underlines the importance of designing and working with materials in the physical space, not just on paper.
Pinning the material in place before stitching allowed me to experiment with the pocket sizes and fine tune their dimensions.
I wanted to create a tool roll that was flexible enough in its size to carry a range of items. As such, I incorporated enough material to comfortably hold a 300mm ruler with the option to fold the roll in half to obtain a more compact form when carrying smaller items. The Roll 01 features a green cotton outer, orange cotton inner lining and white accent stitching.
